CITY OF OSHKOSH Museum Collections Assistant in OSHKOSH, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: The NAGPRA Collections Assistant reports to the Assistant Director/Chief Curator. This is a limited term position expected to work 650 hours over a 12-month period. This position may be used to satisfy an internship requirement or for academic credit. This is a temporary position working with the Oshkosh Public Museum\'s (OPM) collections and curatorial staff on a variety of NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) related activities. The NAGPRA Collections Assistant will re-examine and re-inventory OPM\'s Native American collections that fall under NAGPRA regulations, including human remains, funerary objects, and sacred items along with their associated documentation. The Collections Assistant will assist with updating, reconciling, and organizing OPM records, advise on appropriate records and collections management with regard to cultural sensitivity, craft notices to and communicate with tribal governments, and ensure federal databases are updated. Additional duties may include rehousing materials as requested by consulting tribes, preparing for and participating in NAGPRA consultation meetings, and advising on OPM Policy updates. The following duties are normal for this position. Work with OPM collections and curatorial staff on collections management activities on NAGPRA related collections, including examining, inventorying, cataloging, object handling, re-housing and other tasks related to collections care. Review, organize, reconcile and/or update OPM documentation (paper and digital records), along with archival records (i.e., photographs). Craft notices to and communicate with tribal governments. Update federal databases. Assist with tribal consultation visits and information requests. ***** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of two years of experience working in or with museums. Experience with Native American collections and understanding of the sensitive nature of working with such collections. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of NAGPRA regulations and goals. Experience working with Native American tribes. Demonstrated ability to conduct research using primary documentation (e.g., field notes and photographs) and have excellent organizational skills. Ability to work independently. Possess good interpersonal skills, be team oriented, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with co-workers, other city employees, and the public. Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple priorities, and effectively resolve challenging interpersonal relations. Excellent organizational skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail Experience with a collection database such as PastPerfect, or with database work. Ability to clearly assess, document, and correctly cite historic sources. General knowledge of museum practices. Experience working with and gaining trust with tribal officials and representatives. Thorough knowledge of NAGPRA Regulations Ability to manage sensitive and confidential issues with tact and discretion. Thorough knowledge of the repatriation process.
